Severe winter weather warning – staying healthy during the cold spell

Published:

The Met Office has issued a Level 3 severe winter weather warning for London.

Keep warm, keep well

Keep warm, keep well

It will be in place until 9am on Monday 15 February. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing, and residents are urged to look out for those most at-risk during this period.

Please take extra care while driving or if you are out on foot or cycling.

Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous for the vulnerable as well. This includes for older people, those with underlying health conditions, and young children. The freezing weather conditions could increase the health risks to vulnerable people.

Try to follow these key pieces of winter weather advice:

  • Try to heat your home to at least 18 degrees Celsius.
  • Have hot drinks regularly and at least one hot meal a day.
  • Try to ensure you have stocks of food and medicines ready so you don’t need to go out in extremely cold weather.
  • While continuing to adhere to the COVID-19 restrictions, try to check on the welfare of elderly and vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives to make sure they are okay.

Aside from the challenges of the pandemic, it's also cold and flu season, so it's really important you take the time to look after your health and wellbeing.
