Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, social care staff have been unsung heroes working tirelessly on the frontline to ensure that thousands of our most vulnerable neighbours are supported.
Message from the Leader
Barnet has the biggest care network in London, with over 10,000 people working in adult social care across 160 care providers, including 83 care homes. This has been an extremely difficult time for everyone working in the caring profession and I would like us all to take a moment to recognise the massive commitment they have shown and thank them for their dedication.
Care workers have kept people safe in care homes across Barnet, safely supported people in hospital after falling ill to Covid-19, and given comfort in their final days to those who have sadly lost their lives to the virus. They have maintained the dignity and wellbeing, as well as the health and safety, of those in their care. Their work goes beyond being a job, providing the warmth of friendship and compassion.
Dawn Wakeling, our director of adult social care services, is this week leading the cheer for our care workers, which you can watch here. Please watch and leave your messages of thanks for all the care workers, as well as nurses, managers, housekeeping, catering, administration and maintenance staff, who have worked so hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people supported in Barnet.
This Friday marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Of course, the planned celebrations have been muted but will include the country pausing in a two-minute silence at 11am, and raising a glass in the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2 at 3pm.
Please share your moments throughout the day including tea parties, decorations, the Nation’s Toast, and reminiscences via the council’s Twitter and Facebook accounts using the hashtag #VEDay75Barnet.
Please also visit www.veday75.org for more information on the day.
We all share a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid; the most we can do is to show our thanks for those who have given so much.
Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council
