The Summer Reading Challenge returns this year in virtual form with a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter with the help of the Silly Squad.
Characters from the Summer Reading Challenge 2020
This summer, children will meet the Silly Squad; a loveable bunch of animals who run a fantastic fun house. But beware: a mysterious baddy is waiting to spoil the fun!
Because of the disruption caused by current events this year’s challenge has gone digital. As children read, they will be able to head online to find out more about the fantastic characters and will unlock digital rewards, activities and video content as rewards for their reading.
There’s a huge collection of exciting e-Books and e-Audiobooks available to borrow for free. In the last two months we have seen over 80,000 issues of electronic books, newspapers eAudiobooks and magazines. There are even e-comics on offer.
Barnet’s libraries are also working on setting up a 'Select and Collect' service. The service will allow people to choose a selection of books to collect from a library. Residents should check the Barnet Libraries web page for updates when they are available.
Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge returns a little earlier this year, and in a bit of a different form, but it is still a fantastic way to encourage young readers to keep enjoying books over the summer.
“There’s another great theme this year with some brilliant illustrations to capture the imagination.
“Our libraries have a tremendous array of e-Books and e-Audiobooks for children and adults alike, and all for free, so I would encourage people to head online, see what’s on offer and get involved.”
