Councillors have approved Barnet Council plans for the development of the Hendon Hub following Monday (January 10) night’s Strategic Planning Committee.
Plans for the development, which will be created by Barnet Council in partnership with Middlesex University, were given the go-ahead. This was following consultation with the local community and key stakeholders, which fed into the adaption of the proposals.
Hendon Hub will comprise a combination of affordable homes, homes dedicated for independent young adults and student housing, along The Burroughs and Church End. The new housing will accommodate a projected growth in Hendon’s population and the wider Barnet borough over the next decade.
It is expected that construction works will begin within the next 18 months.
Councillor Dan Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, said: "We are delighted that plans for Hendon Hub can now get underway. Engagement with local residents and stakeholders has been key to ensuring that this development benefits everyone who lives and works in Hendon and I would like to thank those who gave their time to feed back on the proposals.
The development will draw much-needed investment to improve public spaces and university facilities that will be available for all in the area to use. I am proud that we can start to build a Hendon that is fit for the future, our communities and for those who live, work and study in the area."
New retail space and student accommodation will generate an estimated £1.6million as part of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which can be used to support infrastructure investment and local projects.
Benefits of the scheme include:
- a brand-new state-of-the-art library
- new public health community facilities
- a neighbourhood community safety team office
- improved teaching facilities for the University
- improved public realm
- green spaces connecting communities from the Prince of Wales estate to sites along The Burroughs and
- new centrally relocated, bespoke community facilities at the heart of the Boroughs.
The development team for Hendon Hub have worked hard to ensure that new buildings, whilst contemporary, are designed sympathetically and respond to the character of the area.
The existing Hendon Library building will remain under ownership of the Council but will be leased to Middlesex University, who will maintain public access to areas of heritage interest. The building’s heritage value will be enhanced through sensitive internal and external renovation and the removal and replacement of the poor quality 1970’s alterations. The PDSA Pet Hospital will be relocated to a newly designed purpose-built building, close to its current site, keeping it at the heart of the local community.
The masterplan proposals also include significant improvements to the public realm to be made throughout the local neighbourhood, these enhancements will be for the benefit of all who live in the area.
The Council and its partners look forward to continuing to work together with residents and local businesses, to make Hendon a centre of new community and educational facilities and a place for everyone in a thriving Barnet.
