Barnet council consults on new powers to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour

Barnet Council has launched a consultation that would give council and police officers powers to enforce against a range of anti-social behaviours – from problem street drinking to dog fouling.

The consultation, now underway, is asking residents to have their say on the introduction of the borough-wide Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

This order would allow designated council and police officers to take swifter action against those engaging in anti-social behaviour activities, by issuing advice, fines, behavioural orders, and formal prosecutions as appropriate.

Cllr Sara Conway, Barnet Council’s Safer Communities Partnership Board Chair, said:

“We hear regularly from residents about the concern and distress that anti-social behaviour causes. That is why we are now consulting on the introduction of a Public Space Protection Order across the Borough. 

“This innovative approach is designed to give our community safety team and the police a greater range of measures to tackle these issues.

“It will be part of the Council’s wider community safety investment programme that will be announced later this month, reflecting our key pledges to help people feel safer.”
