Barnet Council has become one of just three local authorities in London to be awarded Chartered status for its Councillor development programme.

Chartered status – awarded by the Local Government Association – demonstrates the value placed on Councillors carrying out their important roles. It recognises Barnet’s clear commitment to strategically developing and supporting them, building their skills and knowledge through learning and development.
Councillors gain a range of skills through Barnet’s comprehensive training – coving topics including leadership qualities, council finances, and specialist knowledge for specific roles such as planning and licensing.
Councillor Dan Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, said: “Our comprehensive training programme is an important tool for enabling effective democracy and good governance. The hard work and dedication put towards gaining Chartered status was a collaborative effort by the council’s Governance Team and all Councillors.”
Councillor Barry Rawlings, Leader of the Opposition at Barnet Council, said: “We welcome the Charter status Barnet has gained for Member Development. It is a testimony to the hard work by staff and recognises the need for quality training for Councillors to improve the service offered to local residents.”
The programme helps the council deliver the best possible service for the residents and businesses of Barnet through a highly skilled team of elected representatives. It has helped the council develop a robust and accountable decision-making procedure, improving diversity and enhancing local levels of democracy and participation.
