About governance
Corporate governance is the system by which an organisation is directed and controlled. A good governance structure will include as a minimum:
- roles and responsibilities
- clear standards by which an organisation will be managed
- a mechanism for measuring an organisation's performance against its standards
To be successful, the Council must have a solid foundation of good governance and sound financial management.
Corporate governance arrangements
The London Borough of Barnet is committed to ensuring good governance principles and management practices are adopted in all decision-making and business activities to ensure public trust.
The local code of governance
Our Code of Corporate Governance provides a public statement that sets out the way in which the Council will meet and demonstrate that commitment.
Annual Governance statements
The Council's Annual Governance Statement provides assurance over the Council's Governance arrangements, together with identifying areas of future focus and improvement. It identifies those areas where we can and will do more to ensure that we have effective governance arrangements that enable the organisation to deliver on its commitment to improving lives of all citizens and creating opportunity and prosperity for local people and businesses.
The Governance, Audit, Risk Management and Standards Committee considers the Annual Governance Statement for the previous financial year and provides an update on the progress made in resolving governance issues over the previous year, plus any emerging governance issues for future years.
