Secondary in-year application
Skip to:
School applications made during the school year are called in-year applications. Barnet Council coordinates in-year admissions for all Barnet secondary schools, except for Hasmonean High School for Boys, Hasmonean High School for Girls and Finchley Catholic High School.
If you wish to apply for a place at a school outside Barnet, you will need to contact the local authority responsible for the borough where the school is located for information about the application process.
You should apply for an in-year Barnet school place if your child:
- lives in Barnet and does not currently have a school place
- has recently moved or is in the process of moving from abroad or elsewhere and needs a school place
- has a school place but you want to transfer them to a school in Barnet.

School place offers
We will write to you with the outcome of your application and let you know if we can offer a place at one of your preferred schools.
If none of the schools you have listed are able to offer a place and your child is out of school, we will allocate a place at the nearest school with a vacancy.

Waiting lists
In-year waiting list names are normally held until the end of July each year and you have to submit a new in-year application for the following academic year starting in September.
Your child's name will be kept on the waiting lists for the schools you ranked as a higher preference than the school you have been offered.
Your child’s position on the list can go down as well as up; time spent on a waiting list isn’t taken into account.

Changing your child’s school
Changing schools is not usually in a child’s best interests and a decision to do so should not be taken without careful consideration.
It's very disruptive for children in Years 10 and 11. Other schools may not offer the same subjects as the current school, or they may have a different syllabus or examination board.
We recommend that you discuss your reasons with the head teacher at the current school before requesting a transfer.
If there are things you are not happy with, you may be able to resolve your concerns without changing school.
If your child tells you that they are being bullied or not getting on with other pupils, you should speak to your child’s Form Tutor or Head of Year first.
You also need to bear in mind that most schools in Barnet are full and we may not be able to offer you the school you want.
