Utilities and highways charter
Skip to:
Background
Barnet Council permits an average of 25,000 sets of road works and street works each year. This is equal to almost 1.75 percent of all annual road works carried out in the UK.
It is critical that road and street works are managed and coordinated across Barnet's road network.
About the charter
To make this happen we created and signed the Utilities and Highways Charter on 3 March 2022. We are the first London Borough to adopt and promote such a charter.
It forms an alliance between us and all the major utility companies that work on Barnet's roads and pavements.
The Charter commits to a code of practice for working on Barnet’s roads, leading to the delivery of a more efficient coordinated highway network. This will benefit all the borough’s 402,000 residents, businesses and visitors.
It focuses on:
- the promotion of effective planning
- coordination
- collaboration
- communication
- improved site management
- training
- recognition
- innovation
It is a voluntary arrangement that also supports the legal framework for street works and traffic management.
