What is CIL?
The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a planning charge that Local Planning Authorities and the Mayor of London can set on new development to help pay for community infrastructure.
It offers transparency, consistency and fairness for all developers and local authorities.
The levy also balances the cost of funding infrastructure and the viability of development.
CIL Rate Review
We have reviewed the rate of CIL we charge and a new Charging Schedule was approved by the Council on 1 March 2022.
The new rate will come into effect for all planning permissions granted on or after 1 April 2022. It may also apply to later phases of phased schemes, depending on the interaction of regulation 8 time at which planning permission first permits development and regulation 40.
Details of the CIL Review Examination and the Inspector’s Report can be found on our CIL Review Examination page.

The money can be used to fund new or safer road schemes, schools, health and social care facilities, park improvements and leisure centres.
Barnet updated the Planning Obligations SPD in April 2013. The document helps to clarify the site specific or local circumstances when Planning Obligations will be used.
